Possession Limits (State-wide)
Public Possession: Adults 21 and older may possess up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower in public places.
Home Possession: In private residences, individuals may possess up to 2 pounds of cannabis flower.
Concentrates: Adults may possess or transport up to 8 grams of cannabis concentrate.
Edibles: Possession of edible products infused with a combined total of 800 milligrams or less of THC is permitted.
Where Cannabis Can and Can't Be Used
Cannabis consumption is only allowed in private residences, including your yard (with some restrictions beginning in 2025 for multi-family housing), and private property that is not generally accessible by the public, as long as the property owner permits cannabis use
Cannabis use is strictly prohibited in:
Public schools, state correctional facilities, and places where minors may inhale cannabis vapor or smoke
Federal properties and federally subsidized housing
As of March 1, 2025, vaping or smoking cannabis in multi-family homes (such as apartments), including balconies and patios, will be punishable by a $250 fine (medical cannabis users are exempt)
Indoor public places, public meetings, places of employment, and public transportation covered by the Minnesota Clean Air Act
While operating a motor vehicle or heavy machinery
City Regulations vs. County Regulations
Always check with your specific municipality regarding local laws and ordinances, as city regulations may supersede county regulations depending on the jurisdiction.

Cities are allowed to adopt reasonable restrictions on the time, place, and manner of operations of cannabis businesses, provided such restrictions do not prohibit the establishment or operation of cannabis businesses entirely.
Cities may prohibit cannabis businesses within 1,000 feet of a school, or 500 feet of a day care, residential treatment facility, or attractions within public parks regularly used by minors, including playgrounds or athletic fields.
As of October 2024, many Minnesota cities and counties have established specific limits on recreational marijuana businesses that may differ from county-wide regulations.
